Another week; another six words. For those who are not familiar with Jewish rituals and practices, a Yahrzeit is a day of remembering the passing of a loved one. We light a special candle that burns from between 24 and 26 hours. I’ll be lighting this special candle for my mother, of blessed memory, who passed away 8 years ago.

  1. Susan, you’re writing is always superb. It amazes me how in a few words you can convey such a powerful message. My heart goes out to you on the anniversary on your mom’s passing. I know its never easy but even more difficult on dates like that. Thanks for the Saturday post. I alway’s look forward to your gift of writing.

  2. Thank you for this. While I was growing up in a small town in southeast Kansas, I had one Jewish friend. The last week of May her mother lit candles and sat quietly, and my friend said she was remembering her uncles. For me, this was candles expressing what our family did with flowers at the cemetery. Remembrances. Reminders of undying love.

Go ahead. I don't bite very hard.
